Lavonne McRoberts has just about the biggest heart you're going to find. She works with special needs children, has donated her time to help Rae Fehring run the Girls Rock! Des Moines music camp, and has always got a big smile for anyone who needs it. She also happens to be a marvelously talented musician.
As the frontwoman for Peace, Love & Stuff, McRoberts is the songwriter and voice that makes the band jump and jive. Her vocals are instantly recognizable, and the amount of energy she puts out on stage is seismic: I've personally seen her shake tambourines apart, and pop buttons on stage, literally playing herself out of her clothing.
You can check out McRoberts and her Peace, Love & Stuff guitarist Dylan Boyle on July 4th in Ames. But in the meantime, she took a moment to share some of the music that helps get her going.
Horse Party // "Clarion Call"
"A great Indie/Blues Band from the UK. I discovered their music when they Skyped a performance from the UK to our Girls Rock Des Moines Summer Camp and was pretty impressed."
Molly Gene One Whoaman Band // "Waitin'"
This lady opened up for Goddamn Gallows with Dylan Boyle and she is by far one of the best solo performers I have ever seen as she slays the slide guitar and stomps the box with such energy and soul with a voice of rust parallel to Tom Waits and Wanda Jackson. Great song.
Lil Johnson // "Let's Get Drunk and Truck"
A great raunchy blue's musician from the 30's...what's not to love?
Lana Del Rey // "Video Games"
Mike D from RAYGUN introduced me to her music and she has become a huge influence for me since.
Bikini Kill // "Rebel Girl"
Political, Abrasive and Girl Power
Weezer // "Say It Ain't So"
I'm interrupting my girl power playlist with Weezer because I love them and always will.
Gas Light Anthem // "'59 Sound"
Their whole album is fantastic and rustic sounding.
The Cranberries // "Zombie"
"No explanation needed."
