I met Matthew in the way that a lot of us find like-minded friends nowadays—Twitter. Funny enough, it turned out that he and I had a mutual friend in the NYC music scene who was also recently featured on 8 Tracks (see Anna Stodart's picks here). Those in the Des Moines/Iowa City area might recognize Matthew as a familiar face. Like many of us, he's a hard-working Iowa State graduate student by day and a fantastic music writer in the free-time he has. He's a steady name on Under the Gun Review as a writer and editor, a frequenter on the page of Des Moines' Juice Magazine, as well as a writer for Substream. Somewhere in between all of that, he took some time to share his most-played tracks of the late. Among them, my all-time favorite song by my current favorite band, Die Antwoord. Needless to say, I'm all for this mix.
If there's anyone to trust with a solid playlist of fantastic tracks, I think it's safe to say that Matthew Leimkuehler is your man. Read (and listen) on to see who made it on his 8 Tracks list:
PUP // "Reservoir"
Not one band on this planet gives me faith in the future of rock 'n' roll music more than PUP. It's trite, it's clever, and it stands out like a shiny gem in a muck of monotony.
Foxy Shazam // "Tragic Thrill"
It's odd and addicting like a passive-aggressive horror film.
The Front Bottoms // "Jim Bogart"
Sad music for an often sad dude.
Head Automatica // "Beating Hearts Baby"
Happy music for a sometimes happy dude. This has been one of my favorite songs for the better part of the last decade.
Every Time I Die // "Decayin With The Boys"
Sometimes you need to let your hair down and give in to a massive case of whiplash.
Mime Game // "Do You"
An obligatory shout out to my favorite hometown band and some of the hardest working dudes I know.
No Nets // "Sickness and Wilderness"
One of my absolute favorite unsigned acts right now. No Nets has this obscure mixture of awkward confidence that makes it totally delectable.
Die Antwoord // "Cookie Thumper"
Because we're all a little silly at times.
