You all know Cody if you've spent any time on our site. He's the photographer behind many of the pieces of art you see gracing our Photo page. There's a good chance you've caught sight of him at some point, dodging concert-goers to capture a shot or sharing a few words at the back of a venue with a local musician. And even though he's moved away from Des Moines, he's still just as invested in the Des Moines music scene—long distance relationships to our beloved DSM music venues seem to be a value we hold near and dear to our hearts over here at Band Bombshell. It's safe to say the website would not be what it is today without Cody's contributions.
We know that Cody shoots fantastic photography, but what about his music taste? We got Cody to share eight of his current must-listen songs, including appearances from Haim and Bleachers alongside some local names like Trouble Lights and Little Ruckus. Read (and listen) on to see what else he included in this week's playlist:
I’m With You – Grouplove
I love everything about this song, from the opening piano, to the catchy chorus. I really feel like this song does a good job of hitting all the highs and lows of a good pop song. I usually listen to this song in the morning to get me going. You might have caught them at Brenton Skating Plaza with Portugal. The Man and Starfucker. (If not, read our review here.) The music video is pretty cool, too.
Trouble Lights –Truu Love
I’m pretty sure this was the first song ever I heard by Trouble Lights; at their 2012 GDP performance. Philip Rabalais’s production is layered beautifully under Adrien Logsdon (Daller)’s astounding vocals. It blows me away every time.
Take Your Time (Coming Home) – Fun
Before “We Are Young” and “Some Nights” Fun. Came out with a fantastic album called “Aim and Ignite." It’s a beautiful album filled with orchestration, flowing melodies, and heart felt lyrics. The closing number, “Take Your Time (Coming Home)" really hits home to me. I feel like it’s about living in the moment; have fun and live it up while you can. The phrase “Take your time coming home” to me means take your time settling down and finding that place that you call home. While attending school in Chicago, this song helped me realize that the place I had left behind was more of a home than I knew.
Truth Boiz – Little Ruckus
This whole album is a perfect summer album. I put it on in the car when I’m driving to a show and I want to get pumped up. Almost every song gives me flashbacks to his 2012 80/35 performance (which included a water balloon fight). If you’ve ever seen this song performed live then you are familiar with Dom Rabalais screaming “Shake your butt!” right before the chorus.
Waves – Sleeper Agent
This is such a fun song. Sleeper Agent are really good at taking the typical formula for a pop song and tweaking it a little to make it unique. This song is a great example of that.
Forever – HAIM
Okay, okay. Yes, I love HAIM. I’ll spare you and just say that this is my favorite song of theirs.
Rollercoaster - Bleachers
Hopefully you’ve already heard their breakout hit, “I Wanna Get Better” so let’s move on to my favorite song from the debut album by Jack Antonoff’s new band. This song is pure nostalgia. The hooks and chorus are wonderful. Antonoff is a truly great songwriter and I’m glad he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Let Your Love Grow Tall – Passion Pit
I get chills every time I hear the first three seconds of this song. I usually put this song on when I’m driving home from a show or some kind of fun social gathering. It’s the perfect way to end a great night.
